Frequently asked questions

Motive isn’t recording my trips.

In iOS Settings › Privacy › Location Services, allow Motive “Always” access and turn on “Precise Location”. This is required for Motive to record trips in the background. Also check that Background App Refresh is enabled for Motive.

Which OBD2 adapters are supported?

Motive supports ELM327-compatible adapters using Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE). Classic Bluetooth or Wi-Fi adapters don’t work on iPhone. After connecting, your car’s ECU often needs 10–15 seconds before the first values arrive.

Where is my data stored?

Only on your iPhone. We run no server that receives your trips, cars or documents. The data is normally included in your regular iPhone backup (iCloud or computer).

How do I delete my data?

You can delete individual trips, cars and documents directly in the app. Deleting Motive from your iPhone removes all of its locally stored data. You can remove the Sign in with Apple link in iOS Settings › your name › Sign in with Apple.

Do I need an account?

No. Sign in with Apple is optional and shows leaderboards and achievements in the app. Everything else works without signing in. If you are signed in to Game Center on your iPhone, Motive sends your top speed and achievements to Game Center even without Sign in with Apple. To stop this, sign out of Game Center in iOS Settings.
